[Leica] How did 50mm become the "normal" lens for 35mm cameras?

Adam,

My only experience with a 43mm was when using a Kodak Signet 35 in the 
1950s.  It was a very sturdy little camera of excellent quality.  I even 
used it inside a large wind tunnel to photograph tufts showing airflow 
patterns, though only in low-speed regions.
