I don't want to import the files directly into LR.  I want to move them onto my external hard drive (where I keep all my image files) and then import them from there into LR.

What I have found is that the LR Mobile App will, when asked,  export the dng files to a specified 'collection' in the desktop LR Library Module and from that humble beginning I can move them to the external hard drive and so long as I do this properly LR will know where they are.
