Thanks for the explanation. This is the same story in most old societies,
with the great migration to urban centres taking place, China being the
most extreme example. It is not necessarily a bad thing, as life in these
far flung hamlets, stripped of the romance, was, for the most part, in the
words of Thomas Hobbes, "nasty, brutish and short".
