This squat is a standard posture across most of Asia, where people tend to
sit on the ground in private places, and squat in public places, rather
than on chairs or stools:

In fact an "Indian Style" lavatory, used in rural areas across the world,
requires you to squat, and is far more hygienic than the western ones,
especially in public toilets, because no part of your exposed body comes
into contact with the receptacle.
