The answer to that questions is dependent upon the powder used in the
ammunition.
Ammunition loaded with "smokeless" powder, which is what has been used
for 100+ years now, would have a minimal flame visible.

Loading with black powder, used from the beginning until roughly 1900,
then, yes, you have a lot of smoke and flame.
