I don't think the self-portrait is lit well.  It's unbalanced, too bright on the right and too murky on the left.  It needs a bit of edge light from the left, or a small amount of fill to keep his cheek and shoulders from blending with the background.  One-light portraits just don't make it for me, especially on black (which I prefer as a background).  I need to see separation of tones/planes.
