[Leica] IMG: Counters at work

On Friday, we had the Irish General Election to elect a new government.
Being a political wonk, I went into the count the following day with my
camera as my cousin is the Returning Officer for five of the forty Irish
constituencies. He has hired the Royal Dublin Society headquarters (where
the well known Dublin Horse Show is held) in Ballsbridge for the days
required for the count.

I say days, as Ireland uses the Single Transferable Vote form of
Proportional Representation, and resolving the count can be longer than the
first past the post system. However, this is arguably better for the voters
as it ensures a more balanced representation in the Dail (parliament). Each
constituency has between three and five Teachta Dail (MPs) and overall there
are 158 seats in the Dail.

This is a view of counters in the Dublin Bay South constituency who are
separating the No. 1 votes for Eoghan Murphy (Fine Gael) into counted
segments. As you can see if you enlarge the picture, there are fourteen
candidates for the constituency. Eoghan retained his seat which is good as
I'm great friends with his uncle!
