Sorry, I should have said that the tower is free-standing just outside the courtyard - maybe just to get a view over the vines ;-)

John, had a look at its website and it's impressive. The tower must be only decorative then and it's probably the limestone crumbling from the corbels. 
Wet weather is not the friend of limestone, but as I see from the history the place was bought at some stage by a new owner and given to his mistress. 
Nothing like a fine new upstanding tower to impress a mistress....
