Yes, you do need a filter and and some infrared aware film but no
special chemicals as far as I know... I use good old D76.
Lately I've been using my Pentax ISDS, the older model with a 6 mp
sensor, as it has a very week IR filter so it can take fairly nice
infrared photos depending on the filter.
I use a 720nm when there is something white in the viewfinder. A 720 is
so dark that it it very difficult to see through it so, I use the white
object, (many times a steeple) so that I can position it for what I
think will get me a good composition. Sometimes I use a 680 nm but that
doesn't produce much whiteness in foliage, the IR range being about 700
to 1000 nanometers.
With a TLR and film I use the taking lens for the filter so that I don't
shoot "blind".
