Hi Gerry,
Very cool as in some there isn't any question you know he's concentrating on
listening due to the expression on his face and eyes. 
Now I bet you understand music and the beat whatever. Therefore you were far
more "intune" as he was in listening.
ERGO! You were aware of the beat and what he was listening for allowing you
to capture the moment better than a non-musical relating person.  Good on
you!  :-)
