Interestingly enough, with reference to Aram's recent ballon photos, this
was the site of the first flight from Irish soil back in 1785. Inspired by
the Montgolfier brothers in France, Richard Crosbie made his own balloon and
took off from here before landing a few miles away to the north east in
Clontarf. The prevailing south westerly winds and Dublin's proximity to the
sea would have ensured a watery landing if he had gone much further.
Surprisingly, it was eight years before the first manned flight on US soil
by Blanchard in Philadelphia.
