Mark.. they do deteriorate... your 1's become 0.99's, then 0.98's, etc....
They are magnetic specs that do deteriorate.

You NEED to copy them somewhere (backups?  New HDD??) to renew the 0.99's
and 0.98's to 1's.

They do NOT last forever.  

Ditto, ALL digital media.  Yes, ALL.  CD's, DVD's, Tape, HDD, etc.

OTOH, I did read, a few years back, that the most archival media is B+W
paper that has been archaically processed. So you could ( and I believe I
read, in the same article) store your 1's and 0's as printed bits on photo
paper.....  Not exactly convenient.... but, if you want archival, it is an
available process.....

A reason to go with digital instead of film if you needed a reason is
because the zeros and ones stay zeros and ones. They don't change to .01's
and .9's.
I have thirteen years worth of digital files which as just as viable as the
day they were made. They've not faded they've not obsoleted themselves in
some odd way.
