[Leica] lightroom questions

You have received some sound advice, Steve, but I would add one comment
which has not been made. As you are probably aware, LR uses a so-called
"catalog" for its images. It sounds odd - where is it, where are my images?
In fact, it is precisely - and little more than - what it says - a catalog.
In the same way that when you went to a public library years ago (before
online searching) you could peruse a rack of index cards in the (wait for
it) catalog, indexed by author, by title, it would tell you where on the
shelves to look for the book you needed. That is what the LR catalog is. It
doesn't matter to LR where your images are, so long as you tell it on import
where they are (or where you want LR to put them on import). Unlike the
library index cards, the LR catalog can include a thumbnail (a very large
and detailed one) on the index card, and can also provide multiple indexing
on a wide variety of keys (flags, stars, keywords and so for the), BUT IT IS
STILL JUST AN INDEX. So treat it that way and you will not be either
confused or disappointed.
Of course, LR also has some rather useful image editing tools, but that
isn't what you asked about. :-)

Most important when you wish to move an image from one area on your HDD to
another.....
Use LR to move the image, not your OS. Then LR will track the move.
If you use the OS to move your image, LR does not know where they are, and
the next time you go looking for the image, LR will burp. LR will tell you
"I lost the image".. "Where is it?" You then point to the new location and
LR will pick it up.
If you have not made this mistake yet, you will.... The point being that the
"error" IS correctable. Panic not required.
Frank Filippone, who learned this lesson the hard way as well.....

a few generally easy/straightforward lightroom questions....I guess....
1. where are lightroom images stored, can a particular image be found on the
hard drive 2.if you wish to pull a particular lightroom image for use, can
it be done 3.when you are done an image in lightroom develop, can you save
it to where you wish for a specific use 4.how do you sort, order, eliminate
images in lightroom for use in a book
trying to come to grips, help please....there may be a few more.
many thanks,
Steve
