In the early days of email, you could send to people individually. When 
mailing lists were invented, it had the same effect on email warfare 
that the invention of the machine gun had had on trench warfare.

In the United States, at approximately the same time, the US Postal 
Service began offering "Express Mail -- Guaranteed Overnight Delivery". 
For $12.95 in postage they would guarantee delivery of your envelope to 
its intended recipient by the next morning.

As an experiment in fire prevention, the good people at Xerox Palo Alto 
Research Center, who were at the forefront of many things, realized that 
if an email message was addressed to a list with more than 30 people, it 
would be best to send it by "Express Mail". Guaranteed overnight deliver.
