I rarely believe I'm not cheating.
It's a piece of cake: all I have to do is buy a camera with a long lens, understand how numerous light sources reveal or disguise important or unimportant features, how the lighting and shapes and colors in the background add to or detract from the message I'm trying to convey, understand the relationships between shutter speed, subject motion, camera motion, aperture and ISO, research the critter I want to photograph including habitat, seasonal behaviors and locations, find the one in 20,000,000 that will allow me to get within range for a photo, (optionally) wait for eye contact, and recognize when shapes, colors and shadows line up in an aesthetically-pleasing configuration. The hard part is knowing when to push the button.
