Ted,
The data showed that the trend was primarily economic - the better off you
(men or women) were, the more likely you were to get married, because you
had the economic confidence to provide for your family on a permanent
basis. Most of such decisions we take have anyway been shaped by evolution,
and society, to be efficient in promulgating our genes for another
generation, so, in any sort of human society, the bottom line will always
be the ability to put food and other necessities on the table. The only
thing that differs according to locale is what that skill would be -
hunting might be the most essential skill for tribal societies, for
example, while in developed ones an investment banker might be preferable!
