Maybe I'm just lucky; all of my panos are hand held and seem to stitch
up quite easily in PS. I do make sure I have plenty of overlap and use
the viewfinder frame lines to help in keeping the scene level as I pan.
I also put everything (iso, shutter, white balance) in manual so all
exposures are the same.
As to the 50, the only reason why I didn't use a 35 was that there would
be too much empty foreground, with the river there.
