Elizabeth Powel was one of the most remarkable women in Philadelphia during the continental conventions. She opened up her home, just blocks from Independence Hall to delegates from out of state so that they could eat and talk and discuss the coming war and then, years later, the writing of it’s governing documents in relative comfort. Eliza Powel was an intellectual at a time when most women lived deeply in the shadows of their husbands and she was revered by many of America’s founding fathers.

The greatest friendship to come out of this was a close one with George Washington. He and Powel kept a vigorous intellectual correspondence which Martha Washington burned upon her husband’s death.

Powel and Washington had birthdays only a day apart. This was photographed in the actual living room of the Powel house on Eliza Powel’s birthday, kicking off a year of historical programming.

Leica M9, 35mm summilux at f2.8 and 50mm summilux at f4
