for the viewer.
as an image viewer we say, "the gear is immaterial; it's a powerful photograph; irrespective of the gear."

the painters their brushes.
the barbers their shears.
Ann has two pair of shears. 15 years old. Identical models. One of them is the favorite. The other a backup, "which I don't really like using because of the way they've been sharpened over the years."
