But it is brightly decorated.  Maybe that counts for something.  But I understand the lack of privacy issue.  Kind of like me in boot camp.

This is one part of the trip that I would NOT repeat.  Our homestay in Sapa consisted of a thin foam mat on the floor of an open loft, along with 8 other mats. all occupied.  Access was by a steep ladder, no shoes allowed.
There was one bathroom outside.  I don't mind the lack of bathrooms, but the lack of privacy was not what I expected.  We found out later that others had private rooms in farmhouses for about the same that we paid.
