Well I guess the way I look at it is zones are not f-stops. Velvia 50 gave me 5 stops of latitude, but I could pick the zones I wanted exposed by those 5 stops (highlights of course: let them damned shadows fall where they may!). 

So now split/grad ND filters are rarely used. I use Capture One Pro to process my Phase One files: made by the same company. The highlight and shadow recovery sliders are truly amazing. If you were to look at a raw file for this image, the rabbit brush area covering 1/2 of the bottom appears completely black. And now, using a Surface Pro 3 as my "ground glass" I can actually quickly process the image in the field immediately after it's captured to ensure all highlight and shadow data is there. It is truly an amazing "4x5" system.  I'm in love all over again!
