Last year, I had a nerve in my elbow entrapped that caused my right hand to start to curl and lose function. You can imagine that this is not too good for someone who is a webmaster for university libraries, as well as doing photoshop and scanning for the archives daily.
I had the surgery that rerouted the nerve and though I regained full use of the hand almost immediately, I still had to baby the arm. One of the strategies I found was to move to an iPad mini for most of my surfing, email, and stuff where a mouse is non essential.
The gadget is great. I even have Dish Anywhere, and was able to watch the World Cup Finals on the way home from Covington (Kathy was driving ).
It fits in my camera bag, and the display is terrific.
Since I use an iPhone, many of the apps follow you, and you can even get your messages on it, not to mention FaceTime and Skype.
Another hand saving device is the ability to speak your questions to Google, and Siri.
You can use it for a big screen gps.
I'm not sure though if Garage Band has a Bassoon!

The last time this happened (c. 1990), I stayed in denial too long (didn't want to lose my job). I ended up with a pinched nerve in my wrist, had to have surgery, and was out of commission for a full year. I don't want this to happen again. I'll be seeing a doctor about the current issue soon, but in the meantime...

Unfortunately, a lot of what I do involves the computer. So I was thinking, maybe an alternative device like a tablet, iPad or similar might help take some of the burden off my hands. Different motions than the desktop keyboard/mouse. I could use it for email, groups, Facebook, looking at pictures, and save the real computer for important photo editing, composing music and such.

It's too small for all but the most rudimentary photo viewing, though. I have a Wacom pen and tablet on my desktop computer, but I only find this useful/satisfactory for photo editing, not general navigation. In the 1990s I tried trackballs and touch pads, and never cared much for them. I have no religious attachment to any particular company or technology. I do use PCs, not Macs, simply because that's what I always worked with.
