On top of that we have diverse religions, each of whose numbers in the aggregate are very large - 190 million Muslims (second only to Indonesia), 80 million Christians, and so on and so forth. If any country needed a symbol to bind around, it is India - yet, I do not own an Indian flag - nor do I know any individual that possesses one. Adding to your explanation - maybe it is because the USA is a nation of immigrants, who, having left their homeland and culture, need a common symbol to psychologically hold on to.
