Ten million Poles joined this independent and autonomous trade union. The imposition of martial law and widespread repression failed to hold back Solidarno?? or stem the mounting public pressure for reforms to guarantee freedom and dignity. Following the elections of 4 June 1989 Poland became the first Central and East European country to be led by a non-Communist government. This set in motion democratic changes in other countries, leading to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the unification of our continent.? Besides English, it is written in Polish (obviously), and in the two main languages in Brussels, Dutch and French.
