I'm finding that Kentmere 400 is close enough to APX 400 that I can develop with divided D-23 and tame the grain and contrast. For the slower films (Kentmere 100, APX100, Acros, FM4+) the Barry Thornton Beutler-like developer is marvelous. Both the developers here are easy to mix up fresh.
