The utilities I am acquainted with all use lift trucks. In fact, the caravans of utility trucks moving south to respond to the recent hurricane damage in Mississippi and Louisiana all had lift trucks. So the lineman going up with spikes and a belt is getting to be pretty rare. As a side note you can sort of date poles by the use of creosote as a preservative, the new poles don't have it and haven't for 15 years?
