You could feel the train coming from a long way away and the rail cut was free from tall grass and interesting creatures that lived in the woods. If you payed attention then even the bridges were a short cut over water; you just had to step on the ties and not try to walk the rail. Of course you might have to hurry a bit if you were on a long bridge and a main line train came up on you at speed.
