The story goes that cats were introduced and protected on Philae Island (in the Aswan district) since time immemorial. A goddess going by the name of Bastet, and the daughter of the Sun (Ra) and Hathor, was thought to be kind and protective of the arts, and of women. She was embodied in a ?cat.
