Shooting full frame and printing with filed carriers was an important discipline when film was grainy and many lenses were not so good especially near wide open. Some lenses today(admittedly only a very few) are capable of adequately dealing with over 220 cycles. Most MTF's shown only record data for 30-40 cycles.
