There are Norwegian names because the Norwegians came here first for sealing and whaling, followed by the Scots - so you have names like Leith Harbour, St.Andrews Bay, etc as well! The first organized whaling village, Grytviken, was set up by this guy, Carl Anton Larsen, who as you can read was very much more than a pure whaler. I am sure he would have never started it if he knew the carnage that would eventually take place - a total of 175k+ whales, and in 1929 or 1930, I forget which, over 30,000 Blue Whales in that one year alone! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Anton_Larsen Nature recovers pretty fast if left alone, and that is what seems to have taken place here - the last whaling station was closed in the 1960s. The only species that has not really recovered, because it is an extremely slow process, are the whales, and I have my doubts whether they can ever get back to the pre whaling numbers.
