China got the island back quite legally, on expiry of a lease, and not by force. I expect them to take over Hong Kong, lock stock and barrel, because if they do not show their authority emphatically, they are in danger of splintering, much like USSR did, and what I presume would happen to India if Kashmir were allowed to secede. These are not homogeneous countries at all (we have 22 official languages in our constitution, 44 more demanding inclusion, and a few thousand more on the side), so it is difficult to understand for those who have not lived in such a pot pourri of cultures.
