We will be conducting a cataract surgery survey for candidates for our new cataract surgery center where we will bus in candidates and hold clinics with ophthalmologists from the USA. I do visit some of the same families that I have stayed with over the last 30 years. I have updates on all of the families. Many have left the country, looking for a better life in the cities. Today, they are leaving because they cannot continue to grow their same beans and corn which they have always depended on. The NGOs I work with are working to teach them to grow crops that are drought tolerant, but it's a long, slow process. Some of the families that I stayed with were lost during Hurricane Mitch. I don't like to think of them. The family from Aguacate, posing outside their stick home with their two children and a tiny dog, were never found. I have records for all of the families that I have ever stayed with in Honduras and Guatemala.
