Every single person seemed to be very supportive of Sheikh Hasina and believed that the news in foreign newspapers was very slanted. They insisted that rumors of protests had been greatly exaggerated and that everyone was happy with the results of the election. We spoke to professional people and college professors as well as ordinary people in the countryside. As a result of the election conflict, however, we were assigned a police guard in several areas of the country where we traveled. Two armed policemen rode in the van with us and also rode on several of the boats that we traveled on. Evidently, we were the only tourists in Bangladesh at the time!! They did not want any bad publicity in case anything happened to us! One thing that dismayed me was that most people had a positive impression of our current president. They seemed to think he is very good for the economy and that is all that matters. We disagreed strongly.
