Exactly what I did when I was looking for a 35mm lens for my Fuji X system.
I elected to buy a Fuji X100S instead of a lens, as it gave me a
lightweight and compact backup body as well, albeit a stop slower, and at a
marginally higher cost. Over the years, I added the two excellent Fuji
screw on lens adapters as well, giving me a 28mm-35mm-50mm kit (all f2)
that I could carry with me anywhere with a minimum of fuss. A decision that
I have never regretted.

Cheers
