He had an excellent eye for lighting and used it by shooting from "THE SHADOW-SIDE!" A simple clean subject, but light use and the image jumps off the "SCREEN!" WHY? The beauty of recognizing the "LIGHT ON A SUBJECT?" Then using it to its greatest advantage, sorts out the winning "photographers/photojournalists!" from those with no concept of light recognition nor use what so ever!
