In none of the places I go to (most often Brussels, but also Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Copenhagen etc.) is it possible to pay the driver. Either you have a card of some sort or you have bought a single-ride ticket from a machine before getting on the bus. Or you pay with your mobile.
