The sales are fundraisers for the local fire companies, and almost anything imaginable is auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the fire co. In Pennsylvania, outside of large cities every community fire company is completely self-supporting from volunteer labor and fundraising. Each one of these sales covers the budget for that particular fire company's year ahead.
