In Pennsylvania fire companies outside of cities are completely supported by donations and volunteers, rather than taxes. In Lancaster County the biggest annual fundraisers are mammoth auctions, called "Mud Sales" since they take place during the mud season (March, between Winter and Spring planting). Everything and anything is sold here: quilts, antiques, farm implements, junk, buggies, candy, meals. The boys in this picture are holding up a flatbed cart that was turned on its side. I loved how they were lining up against the leaning cart. Next week, weather permitting, I'll be going to the largest of the mud sales in Gordonville, PA. That one includes an extensive livestock auction.
