I have a small history with the program that led to the Osprey.? In 1952, the USAF held a competition for vertical take-off, high-speed cruise aircraft. There were 3 proposals, and I ran wind tunnel tests on the Bell configuration, designed by the late Bob Lichten, in the old 20-ft Massey Memorial Wind Tunnel at Wright Field.? It was called the Bell Convertiplane.? It was a long time getting through a lot of starts and stops before finally being produced as the Osprey. And, it is still a very complex aircraft.
