My neighbor tells me that commercially grown tomatoes have been bred to last in the marketplace. Gone are the fresh smell and the bruising that leads to earlier spoilage, but also the old-time taste. My point of reference goes back to the Oxheart and Marglobe tomatoes of the 1930s, both now classed as heirloom tomatoes.
