Despite a prediction of "thousands" of Trump supporters descending on Independence Mall, there were no more than about sixty. Of the counter-protesters, about fifty. However, a group wearing ski masks and calling themselves anti-Fascists numbered about 150, and marched on Market Street in front of the protest. A few of them got a little rambunctious--the smoke bombs in particular--and were detained by the police. My shot showed one of them against the police car. All in all, it was the protest equivalent of Groundhog Day--I think that the radio of photographers-to-protesters was about 10:1, and the protesters for the most part looked at their shadows. The Trump group's event consisted of the usual three patriotic songs, a few speakers, and that was about it. When I read the Philadelphia Inquirer's account of the event, I couldn't believe that I'd been in the same place. The Inquirer made it out to be an echo of Chicago '68, while it was more like a dull Thursday afternoon in front of Trump Tower.
