I was in Portsmouth NH once and saw a stunning red tree outside a typical white church with a pond - an ideal picture postcard shot - so I told my wife I would go back next day and photograph it as it was getting late and the light was goinf. I went back next morning and the tree was completely bear, not a leaf left. I am told it was a sugar maple, and that is what they do.
