You might try this freeware software: http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/ See if that solves your problem as it will work with all drives, including external. Curious if your built in drive goes to sleep with your current settings, or is it only your externals? I've tried setting it to never turn off and all various times but nothing works. Mine is My Custom Plan instead of Balanced and right now I have it set to never turn off - still does, though.
