Hi Nathan,
Despite my somewhat anti film post. :-) In all honesty I have wondered what
it would be like blowing a few rolls of B&W film just for the hell of it?
:-)
Then I cringe at putting all my old darkroom back into shape, mixing
chemicals, buying new film reels and tank!
Oh well next time? And I put the idea away for now!

One of the toughest things about film when covering the Olympics was always
checking how many frames are left on a roll?
Whether you had one Leica or 6 as I was festooned with on occasions'.
Imagine this one? There you are at the finish line, the "Men's 100 metre
final." You've been there since 7.a.m. waiting to hold your spot for this
most important race at 1.30 in the afternoon. Yeah that's right, 7a.m.!! And
the race is at 1.30!! And you guys thought covering the Olympics was all
fun? :-) When that one race would have approx. 300 photographers crammed
mainly at the end of the track all shooting the same image of 8 runners
coming straight at them.
"DON'T GO THERE!!" :-( The start gun goes "BANG!"and the race is over in
9.79 seconds! Like you've hardly had time for a second breathe and it's
over!
However as the runners approach the finish line you click off a few frames.
BUT YOU USED 30 ON PREVIOUS RACES!
Before the race? You were distracted and didn't remember to check how many
frames are unexposed on the main camera? It's a 36 frame roll and you've
shot 30 on the previous races. You didn't check? The gun goes and the
runners are coming at you like bolts of lightning!
In milli seconds they near the finish line? You click off frames quickly!
Crossing the line winner photo? GUESS WHAT? :-(
YOU'VE RUN OUT OF FILM! Why? Well on key events such as this you should
always have brand new 36 FRM rolls in each camera with their various lenses
so? "YOU WILL NOT RUN OUT OF FILM AT PRECISELY THE ULTIMET MOMENT OF THE
WINNER CROSSING THE FINISH LINE!" If you haven't re-placed rolls? oops!:-(
Please don't think this would never happen to you?
If you have never covered this type of sport event why would you ever think
of taking a half used roll out of your camera? JUST IN CASE? Then re-load
with a 36 brand new 36 frame roll! Now there's a bit of free sports==camera
use advice! :-)
Oh and I've been shooting all the big international sports events since 1970
in Edinburgh, Scotland. "The Commonwealth Games." Much like the Olympics.
Only the countries are in the British Commonwealth compete! You think these
games have more photogs than you ever seen? Wait until you go to cover the
Summer Olympics!!
cheers,
Dr. Ted Grant O.C.

But it is fun, and it just goes to show that our art form is an inclusive
one. During the past week, I have shot film, regular digital, and infrared
digital (with the M8). It?s all good.

Cheers,
Nathan
