In fact, in 2002, Ireland was the pioneer of this environmental experiment, as we were the first country in the world to introduce such a measure. The Government bag levy (15c per bag) helped start a massive decrease in the usage of plastic bags of over 90% here, encouraging supermarkets to switch to more sustainable bags. Today, I did a small shop bringing just two "lifetime" bags to to the supermarket, and would mention that this particular household hasn't had a plastic bag in it for around thirteen years.
