I was in the USAF when I started with the Leica, and had some "enablers", but also some good teachers. I soon graduated to bulk loading Plus-X, and even bulk-loading Kodachrome movie film. Shooting slides, in my case, made me more careful, to keep the success rate fairly high. I don't recall ever leaving the lens cap on.
