Speaking of which, in November I visited the (relatively) new slavery museum in Liverpool. This city on England?s west coast was the main European centre for the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Ships sailed from there with goods for west Africa, where those goods were exchanged for slaves to be shipped across the Atlantic. From the New World, the ships returned to Liverpool with goods from the Americas, and then the cycle was repeated. The museum in Liverpool depicts this triangular trade in chilling detail. Nothing gory, mind you?it is not necessary. Just seeing the ships manifestos and the statistics about survival rates, food rations etc. is sufficient. It is very well done and presented and definitely one of the highlights of a visit to Liverpool.
