Because life in their corrupt, poor, mis-governed countries is even worse.
By coincidence, there was a story on the radio here yesterday about
migration patterns in and out of Spain during the last few years. When the
crisis hit, many Eastern Europeans went home, rather quickly. This makes
sense since their economies have generally weathered the crisis better
(especially Poland) and as EU citizens, they can always come back when times
get better (as they seem to be getting now). There has also been a
significant out-migration of South Americnas (the largest group of
foreigners in Spain), many of whom went back to their countries. But the
African migrants already here stayed because even being without work in
Spain and selling trinkets on the street is better than life in, say, Mali.

Cheers,
Nathan
