Its presence dates back to the initial M8 design. It didn't prove to be as accurate as was originally planned though and hence wasn't used for every function originally planned. The function is used for TTL flash though. Keep in mind that Leica Camera needed to ensure compatibility with lenses from 1954 in a digital system.
