You can import from another catalogue, along with the raw files, adjustments, rating, etc. I consider the catalogue on my desktop (an 7-year old MacPro) to be the "master" copy, and I periodically import images from the laptop, after the initial work is completed on the laptop. Lightroom is fundamentally designed as a single-user, single-machine application, and I'd imagine it would take a lot of redesign to allow manipulation of a catalogue from multiple machines (getting off SQLite won't be fun) The application can't even manipulate multiple catalogues at a time.
